Structural plywood — typically WBP (weather and boil proof) bonded ply — is the alternative to chipboard as a rigid deck under liquid screed on suspended timber floors. It's generally chosen where spans are longer, loadings are heavier, or where the extra dimensional stability of ply is preferred over particleboard.

The preparation principles overlap heavily with chipboard decking, but ply behaves slightly differently in terms of stiffness and moisture response, which is worth understanding if you're choosing between the two.

Plywood's layered construction, with alternating grain direction between veneers, gives it more predictable behaviour under load than a particleboard product, and it tends to tolerate incidental site moisture better before the building is fully weathertight. That combination is why it's often specified on projects where the deck will see a harder working life before and during the screed pour.

Plywood Decking — the points that decide it

  • Structural plywood typically offers greater stiffness for a given thickness compared with chipboard, useful on longer joist spans
  • WBP grade or similar exterior-bonded plywood resists delamination from moisture better than interior-grade ply
  • Sheets should be laid with staggered joints and glued as well as screwed to joists at correct centres
  • Plywood's grain direction affects its stiffness — sheets are usually laid with the face grain running across the joists per manufacturer guidance
  • A separating membrane is still required between plywood and the screed, the same as with chipboard
  • Ply is sometimes specified where a floor will later need lifting or altering, since it holds fixings and re-fixing better over time than chipboard
  • Plywood is generally more tolerant of brief exposure to site moisture during construction than chipboard, though it should still be kept reasonably dry
  • Sheet thickness for a screed deck typically starts higher than the thinnest structural grades used for roofing or wall sheathing, reflecting the point loads involved in a wet pour
  • As with chipboard, a compatible underfloor heating fixing system should be used if pipework is fixed directly to the ply deck

Ply vs chipboard for a screed deck

Both materials can perform well under a liquid screed if specified and fixed correctly, but plywood generally has an edge in stiffness-to-thickness ratio and holds up better to repeated fixing and unfixing, which matters if service runs or access panels are anticipated. Chipboard is often more cost-effective for straightforward domestic floors where these factors aren't a concern.

Neither material is a substitute for correct joist spacing and span design — the deck adds stiffness to the system but doesn't compensate for an under-specified structure.

Fixing and orientation

Plywood sheets are typically laid so the face veneer's grain runs perpendicular to the joists, which gives the sheet its best bending stiffness in the direction that matters most. Screwing at the manufacturer's specified centres into every joist, with glued edges, keeps the deck acting as a single stiff plane rather than a series of independently flexing panels.

Edge support matters as much as fixing into joists — sheet edges that fall between joists need noggins or a supported edge detail so they don't flex independently of the rest of the deck under point load.

When the extra cost of ply is justified

Plywood typically costs more than an equivalent chipboard deck, so the decision usually comes down to span, loading and how the floor will be used afterwards. Commercial fit-outs, floors expected to see repeated access for services, or longer joist spans where stiffness is at a premium are the situations where ply's extra performance is worth paying for.

On a straightforward domestic refurbishment with standard joist centres and no unusual loading, correctly specified chipboard often achieves the same result at a lower material cost, which is why it remains the more common choice for typical housing projects.

Site handling and moisture

Ply tolerates incidental wetting during construction — a leaking roof before the building is weathertight, for example — better than chipboard, which can swell more significantly if it gets properly wet. That said, this tolerance shouldn't be relied on as a substitute for good site management, and standing water on any timber deck should be dealt with promptly regardless of the material.

Sheets should still be stored flat and protected from the weather before fixing, and any sheet that has visibly delaminated or swollen at the edges should be set aside rather than used.
