Liquid Screed vs Dry Screed Boards
Two very different ways to get a flat floor: a pumped liquid that self-levels and cures, or a dry panel system that's walkable the same day. Here's how they actually compare on site.

Dry screed boards — tongue-and-groove chipboard or gypsum-fibre panels laid over loose-fill or insulation — are marketed hard on speed: no drying time, walk on it immediately. Liquid screed is marketed on flatness and thermal performance. Both claims are true, but they solve different problems.
We install liquid screed daily and we're regularly asked to price against a dry board quote on the same job, usually because a contractor further up the chain has priced boards for programme reasons. This page sets out where each genuinely wins.
The short answer: boards suit rushed refurbishments with light loads and no UFH; liquid screed suits anything with underfloor heating, higher point loads, or a flat, hard finish under tile or stone.

Choose liquid screed when
- Wet underfloor heating is in the build-up
- Large-format tile or natural stone is the final finish
- The room sees heavy furniture, catering equipment or foot traffic
- You want one continuous, joint-free surface across a whole floor plate
Choose dry screed boards when
- The programme genuinely can't accommodate any drying time
- Loads on old or weak floor joists must be kept minimal
- The finish is carpet or engineered wood on a light domestic refurb
- Access for a pump and mixer isn't practical

Boards win on same-day access. Liquid screed wins on flatness, thermal performance and anything with tile or UFH in the spec. If your build has either of those two things, boards will cost you more in workarounds than the time they save.
