How we cover Somerset
Somerset is our second county after Devon. The M5 makes Taunton a straightforward run from Exeter, so a Taunton pour is priced exactly like a Devon one. Further into the county a small mobilisation fee is added, and it is shown on the quote before you commit. Our town page for liquid screeding in Taunton shows the two Somerset jobs on this site: an industrial pour at Blackbrook and an underfloor heating screed in a kitchen-diner.
Somerset is not one council. Somerset Council, formed in April 2023 when the four old districts were abolished, covers Taunton, Bridgwater, Yeovil, Wells, Frome and most of the county; Bath and North East Somerset and North Somerset are separate unitary authorities. The housing figures below are for the Somerset Council area only.
Off-gas homes and underfloor heating
In the Somerset Council area about 12% of homes rely on oil alone for heating and another 10% on electricity alone (Census 2021). Off-gas homes are often where heat pumps go in, and heat pumps work best with underfloor heating in a screed that wraps the pipes fully. Liquid flow screed does that in one pour; our underfloor heating screed guide explains depths and drying.
Around a third of homes in the council area are detached and two-thirds are owner-occupied, so extensions and self-builds make up a large share of floor screeding in Somerset.
Ground conditions on the Levels
The Somerset Levels and Moors sit barely above sea level, on marine clay near the coast and peat inland, kept drained by pumping. On soft ground like this the slab and floor build-up beneath a screed need proper design by the engineer or main contractor. We pour to the agreed build-up rather than design the slab, and we will flag anything on the drawings that looks wrong for the mix.
Stone buildings and conservation areas
Somerset has 190 conservation areas in the Somerset Council area alone, and a long tradition of Bath stone, Blue Lias and Ham Hill limestone, with lias once burnt locally for lime mortar. For breathable floors in older stone buildings, see our lime screed page; for modern extensions, Cemfloor and anhydrite screed are the usual choices.

- Not in Taunton, which is inside our no-surcharge area. Further into Somerset a small mobilisation fee is shown on the quote before you commit.
- Do you lay commercial floors in Somerset?
- Yes. The Blackbrook pour in Taunton on this site is an industrial-scale job. See our commercial and industrial floor screeding page for how larger pours are planned.
- Is my water hard in Somerset?
- It varies by postcode. More than one water company supplies the county, so check your own postcode rather than a county-wide figure.
