Screed Thickness Tolerance Checks Over UFH Pipework
Depth pins and spot checks during pouring help confirm screed thickness over UFH pipes stays within the agreed tolerance across the floor.
Achieving the specified minimum cover over underfloor heating pipes across an entire floor area, not just at one or two points, is one of the more precise parts of a heated screed installation. Liquid screed's self-levelling nature helps considerably here compared with a hand-trowelled floor, but depth still needs checking as the pour progresses rather than assumed.
Depth pins or gauges set out before pouring give the pump operator and screeders a visual reference as the material flows and is levelled, and spot checks continue across the floor area as pouring proceeds, particularly around changes in level, thresholds, or areas where the subfloor itself may not be perfectly flat.
Where a check reveals a low spot forming over a pipe run, it's addressed while the screed is still workable rather than left for the floor to be assessed only once it has cured, by which point options for correction are far more limited.

Where checks matter most
Areas near thresholds, changes in subfloor level, or close to manifold cabinets are the most likely places for cover to vary, so these get particular attention during pouring rather than relying solely on the general pin layout across open floor areas.
Recording depth on site
Keeping a simple record of depth checks taken during the pour provides a useful reference afterwards, particularly on larger projects where several different areas or zones have been poured over more than one day.
Setting a consistent benchmark
Using a laser level set to a fixed reference height, rather than relying on tape-measure checks from an assumed datum, gives a more consistent basis for setting depth pins across a large or level-critical floor. This reduces the chance of cumulative small errors building up across a big open area.
