Not every liquid screed pour needs a primer, but where the substrate is porous, dusty, or where a bonded or semi-bonded design is being used, the right primer or bonding agent plays a real role in how well the floor performs. Its job depends entirely on the design — sealing a porous slab to control absorption is a different task from creating a mechanical or chemical bond in a bonded screed application.
It's a step that's easy to underestimate because it happens before the more visible pour itself, but a primer applied at the wrong dilution, on a poorly prepared surface, or left to dry for the wrong length of time can undermine the whole floor. As with most screed detailing, the manufacturer's datasheet for both the primer and the screed product should be followed rather than assumed from experience on a different system.

Primers & Bonding Agents — the points that decide it
- Primer choice depends on whether the design is bonded, floating or unbonded
- On floating designs, priming is less about adhesion and more about controlling dust or absorption from a separating membrane
- Bonded designs rely on a correctly applied primer or bonding agent for structural performance
- Over- or under-diluted primer can both cause problems, so mixing ratios should follow the datasheet
- Primer needs adequate open or drying time before the screed is poured
- Substrate cleanliness before priming affects the result as much as the primer itself
- Some primers double as a vapour-reducing treatment, but this is not the same as a full damp-proof membrane
- Two-part epoxy bonding agents are sometimes used for heavily loaded or high-performance bonded applications
- Coverage rates should be checked against the actual porosity of the substrate on site, not just the datasheet minimum
- Primer that becomes contaminated or damaged before the pour usually needs reapplying rather than covering over
Matching primer to floor design
In a floating screed over a separating membrane, there's generally no adhesive bond intended between the screed and the substrate below, so priming (where used at all) tends to focus on preparing the surface the membrane sits on or managing dust rather than achieving adhesion.
In a bonded or semi-bonded design, the primer is doing structural work — it's the interface the entire bond depends on, so correct surface preparation, dilution and application timing are critical rather than incidental.
Common pitfalls
Applying primer too thickly, at the wrong dilution, or over a substrate that hasn't been properly prepared are among the most common causes of bond failure or surface defects traced back to the priming stage.
Timing matters too — pouring screed before a primer has reached its correct open or cure window, or leaving it too long so it loses its tack, can both compromise the intended performance.
Types of primer and bonding agent
Products range from simple acrylic or SBR-based primers used mainly to control absorption, through to two-part epoxy bonding agents used where a higher-strength, heavily loaded bonded interface is required, such as some commercial or industrial applications.
Choosing between these isn't just a cost decision — the substrate condition, expected loading and the specific screed system all influence which primer type is appropriate, so the choice should sit within the overall floor design rather than being picked independently.
Site conditions affecting primer performance
Temperature, humidity and substrate porosity on the day of application all affect how a primer cures and how much coverage it achieves — a highly absorbent or previously untested substrate may need a different approach than the datasheet's generic coverage rate assumes.
Dust, standing water or contamination arriving after priming but before the pour can compromise an otherwise correctly applied primer, so protecting the primed surface in the gap between priming and pouring is worth planning for on a live site.
