Curing and drying are often used interchangeably but they describe two different processes. Curing is about protecting the screed while it hydrates (in cement-based systems) or sets, gaining the strength it needs before foot traffic, further trades or environmental extremes can affect it. Drying, by contrast, is the much longer process of moisture leaving the slab until it's ready to receive a floor covering.

A correct curing regime typically involves controlling airflow, temperature and direct sunlight over the floor in the first days after pouring, since rapid or uneven moisture loss at the surface during this early period can cause surface cracking, dusting or reduced surface strength — problems that show up regardless of how well the floor eventually dries.

Because curing happens early and its effects aren't always immediately visible, it's a stage that's sometimes rushed on site under programme pressure. The consequences, though, tend to surface later as surface defects or reduced durability, so it's worth treating the curing window as a fixed, non-negotiable part of the programme.

What happens if curing is rushed

Uncontrolled airflow across a freshly poured screed — from open windows, doors, heaters, or extraction — can dry the surface too quickly relative to the body of the screed, leading to surface cracking, curling at edges, or a weak, dusty finish that causes problems for whatever flooring goes on top later.

These defects are typically the result of conditions in the first days after pouring, well before the floor is anywhere near ready for flooring, which is why curing needs attention even though it feels early in a long overall programme.

Managing site conditions during curing

Good practice generally includes protecting the floor from direct sunlight and draughts, maintaining reasonably stable temperatures, and restricting access until the screed has reached sufficient early strength for foot traffic, all guided by the specific product's datasheet.

This period is also when other trades need to be managed carefully — protective boards, controlled access routes and clear signage all help prevent damage to a screed that looks solid on the surface but hasn't yet developed full strength.

Curing differences between binder types

Cement-based and calcium sulfate (anhydrite) screeds behave differently during curing, with different sensitivities to airflow, temperature and early moisture loss, so a curing regime suited to one binder type shouldn't be assumed to suit the other without checking.

Where a project involves an unfamiliar binder system, the manufacturer's specific curing guidance is worth confirming directly rather than relying on general experience from a different product.

Managing curing through changeable weather

Cold conditions slow strength gain and can extend the curing period, while hot, dry or draughty conditions risk the surface drying too quickly relative to the body of the screed, so the appropriate response depends on which risk is more relevant on a given day.

On sites without full weather protection, temporary measures such as covering openings or adjusting heating and ventilation can help keep curing conditions within a reasonable range until the floor is enclosed.
