The choice of floor covering over a UFH screed affects not just appearance underfoot but the heat output the room can achieve, how quickly the floor responds to temperature changes, and the moisture testing needed before installation can start.

This page compares the four most common coverings used over UFH screed floors — tile and stone, LVT, engineered wood and carpet — so the trade-offs in thermal performance, moisture tolerance and installation timing are clearer when making a decision.

Getting this choice right early matters because it can affect the screed depth specified, the moisture threshold the floor needs to reach before flooring goes down, and how the heating system is commissioned once the covering is in place.

Adhesive selection matters as much as the covering material itself. Tile adhesives, LVT adhesives and engineered wood adhesives are all formulated slightly differently for flexibility and heat tolerance, and using a standard adhesive not rated for underfloor heating over a heated screed can lead to bond failure even where the covering itself would otherwise have been suitable.

Tile, stone and LVT

Tile and stone are widely regarded as well suited to UFH due to low thermal resistance and good tolerance of both moisture and temperature during the drying and commissioning process. LVT can also perform well, but products and adhesives vary significantly between manufacturers, so checking datasheets for UFH compatibility is essential rather than assuming all LVT behaves the same way.

Engineered wood and carpet

Engineered wood requires specific manufacturer approval for use over underfloor heating, including a maximum surface temperature and often a tighter moisture content requirement before laying, to reduce the risk of movement or cupping. Carpet with underlay adds meaningful thermal resistance, which the heating design should account for if it's the intended final finish.

Adhesive compatibility across coverings

Tile adhesive rated for underfloor heating is typically more flexible than a standard rigid adhesive, better able to accommodate the slight thermal movement of a heated screed without cracking. LVT and engineered wood adhesives have their own heat-tolerance ratings, and using a product not specifically rated for UFH is one of the more common, avoidable causes of covering failure over an otherwise sound screed.

Underlay choice for carpet

Where carpet is the intended covering, underlay thickness and density should be checked against the manufacturer's guidance for use over underfloor heating rather than chosen purely for underfoot comfort, since a thick, highly insulating underlay can noticeably reduce the heat actually reaching the room.

Commissioning sequence relative to covering installation

Some coverings, particularly tile and stone, are sometimes laid before full commissioning heat-up begins, while others, especially engineered wood, generally require the screed to have already been through its commissioning cycle and cooled before installation, so the sequence should be confirmed for the specific covering chosen.

Getting this sequence wrong — for example laying a moisture-sensitive covering before commissioning has confirmed the floor's condition — is a common avoidable cause of covering problems traced back to programme pressure rather than the screed or covering themselves.

Cover depth and covering choice considered together

A covering with high thermal resistance interacts with cover depth in the same way it interacts with flow temperature, meaning the achievable output for a given cover depth is lower under thick carpet than under tile, which is worth checking against the room's heat loss before finalising both decisions.

Where a covering choice changes after cover depth has already been agreed, it's worth flagging the change back to the UFH designer rather than assuming the original depth and spacing will still deliver adequate output.
