Once a liquid screed floor has been poured over underfloor heating pipework, the days and weeks that follow are a vulnerable period. The screed needs to firm up before it can take foot traffic, and it needs to continue curing largely undisturbed before other trades load it with materials, scaffolding, or equipment. On a heated floor, protecting the surface also protects the pipework beneath it from point loads that could otherwise cause damage.

We agree access timing with the main contractor before pouring, and it's worth other trades on site understanding that a freshly poured heated screed floor is not simply a hard surface ready for immediate use, even once it appears firm enough to walk on carefully.

Protection boards or sheeting are commonly used once foot traffic resumes, spreading loads and guarding the surface from spillages, dropped tools or wheeled equipment while other work continues around the site during the curing period.

Typical access sequence

There is a period after pouring where the floor cannot be walked on at all, followed by a stage where careful foot traffic is possible, and only later a point at which heavier work and eventual commissioning can proceed; the exact timings depend on the specific screed and site conditions.

Guarding against site trades

Trades returning to site after a pour, particularly those bringing in materials, ladders or equipment, are a common source of avoidable surface damage, so clear communication and appropriate protection covering are worth arranging before that work resumes.

Matching protection to expected site traffic

The type and thickness of protection board used should reflect what's actually expected to cross the floor before final covering is laid — light foot traffic needs less robust protection than trades bringing in scaffold towers, kitchen units or heavy plant. Agreeing this with the main contractor avoids under-protecting a floor that turns out to see heavier use than first assumed.

Post-Pour Protection — the points that decide it

  1. 1Freshly poured screed needs time to firm up before any foot traffic at all
  2. 2Continued curing without disturbance matters even after the floor can be walked on
  3. 3Point loads from equipment or materials can risk both the surface and pipework beneath
  4. 4Protection boards or sheeting are commonly used once site traffic resumes
  5. 5Access timing should be agreed with the main contractor before the pour
  6. 6Other trades should be made aware the floor is not ready for full loading immediately
  7. 7Protection board specification (thickness, load rating) should match the trades expected to use the floor before flooring is laid
  8. 8Site signage or barrier tape marking a freshly poured zone reduces accidental early access by unfamiliar trades
