Before screed goes down, the UFH pipe has to be fixed securely enough to stay in place, at the correct spacing, throughout the pour. Clip rail, staple gun and castellated panel systems all achieve this differently, and the choice is usually made by the UFH designer or installer based on the build-up and budget rather than the screeder.
As screeders, our main interest is that whichever system is used, the pipe is properly restrained and pressure-tested before we arrive to pour.
Cost and installation speed differ noticeably between the three systems too. Staple guns are typically the cheapest and quickest to install on large, simple floor plans, castellated panels cost more per square metre but give a very consistent finish with minimal setting-out, and clip rail sits between the two, often chosen where precise, adjustable spacing across a complex layout is more important than raw installation speed.

What matters to the screeding team
Regardless of fixing method, we're looking for pipe that's held firmly at the correct height and spacing, with no loose sections likely to float during pumping. Panel systems tend to give the most visually consistent result before pouring, but well-executed clip rail or staple installations perform just as well in practice.
Practical differences that affect the job
Panel systems sit at a fixed thickness, which needs to be accounted for in the overall floor build-up and can slightly reduce ceiling heights compared to loose-fill insulation with clip rail. Staple fixing is often the quickest and most economical on straightforward layouts but needs a careful staple density, particularly on bends and closely spaced loops.
Cost and speed trade-offs
Staple fixing is generally the fastest and most economical method to install across a large, simple floor plan, which is part of why it remains popular on straightforward new-build ground floors. Castellated panels cost more per square metre but reduce setting-out time and give a very consistent, repeatable spacing, which some installers prefer on complex or high-value projects.
What we look for regardless of method
Whichever system has been used, our pre-pour check focuses on the same things: no pipe sitting loose or able to float, adequate fixing density at bends, a completed pressure test, and confirmation that the fixing method's build-up height has already been accounted for in the target screed depth.
Retrofit suitability of each fixing system
In retrofit projects where build-up height is tight, low-profile panel systems are often favoured because their fixed thickness is known and easy to plan against door thresholds, whereas clip rail and staple systems depend more on the insulation thickness chosen alongside them.
Staple guns remain a practical retrofit option too, particularly where an existing insulated subfloor is already in reasonable condition and only the pipe-fixing layer needs adding before the screed pour.
Manifold connection and pipe entry detailing
Wherever pipe runs approach the manifold, fixing density typically needs to increase regardless of which system is used elsewhere on the floor, since this zone carries the tightest bends and the greatest concentration of parallel pipe runs on the whole job.
Confirming that the chosen fixing method has been applied consistently right up to the manifold connection, rather than only across the open field of the room, is one of the checks worth making before booking a pour.
