Laying liquid screed over a timber deck — whether traditional joists with a board or ply deck, or an engineered timber floor system — introduces considerations that don't apply to concrete substrates, chiefly around deflection, movement and the compatibility of the screed system with a flexible structural base.
Timber floors flex under load in a way that concrete does not, so a rigid screed poured directly onto a timber deck without an appropriate proprietary system can be prone to cracking as the structure moves beneath it. Purpose-designed systems exist for this application, typically combining a specific screed formulation with a compatible deflection-tolerant layer or reduced thickness approach.
Because of this, screed over timber is generally treated as a specialist application requiring a system specifically designed and tested for use on flexible timber structures, rather than a standard concrete-substrate screed applied without modification.


Why timber decks behave differently
Timber joisted floors are designed to a deflection limit under load, typically expressed as a fraction of the span, and some deflection is expected and normal in service. A standard rigid screed poured directly onto this kind of structure without a suitable system can crack as the deck flexes, particularly at movement-sensitive points like mid-span or over supports.
This is why timber-deck screed applications are generally treated separately from concrete substrate work — the structural behaviour beneath the screed is fundamentally different and needs a system engineered to accommodate it.
What a suitable system typically includes
Systems designed for timber substrates typically pair a specific screed formulation with guidance on deck stiffness, board fixing and joint detailing, and may specify a maximum span-to-deflection ratio for the timber structure before screed can be applied at all.
Getting confirmation from the screed manufacturer that their system is suitable for a timber deck application — and following their design guidance on deck preparation — is an essential first step, rather than treating it as a variant of a standard concrete build-up.
Deck preparation before screeding
The timber deck itself needs to be sound, adequately fixed and free from excessive movement at board joints, since any looseness beneath the screed can transfer directly into cracking above. Board type, fixing centres and joint detailing are typically specified as part of the overall system rather than left to standard carpentry practice.
Any signs of deflection beyond the design limit, damp-affected timber or inadequate joist sizing should be resolved structurally before screed is considered, since no screed system can compensate for an undersized or overly flexible timber structure.
Underfloor heating and other coordination points
Underfloor heating can be combined with screed over timber, but this requires the structural, heating and screed designs to be coordinated from an early stage, since pipe loading, screed thickness and deck deflection all interact in ways that don't apply to a concrete floor.
Because timber-deck systems are more specialist than standard concrete build-ups, it's worth involving the screed manufacturer's technical team alongside the structural designer at the design stage, rather than finalising the timber structure first and fitting the screed system around it afterwards.
