Sand blinding is a thin layer of compacted sand laid over a rougher substrate — typically hardcore, or an uneven beam and block surface — to give insulation boards and membranes a smooth, stable base to sit on. It isn't structural in itself; its job is purely to fill small irregularities and protect the layers above from sharp or uneven material below.
It's a preparation step that's easy to skip on a tight programme, but the consequences of skipping it usually only show up once the screed is down and a soft or uneven patch develops.
Blinding is a groundworker's task rather than something the screed contractor typically installs, but it directly affects the quality of the surface the screed team then has to work over, which is why it's worth understanding even if it's someone else's part of the job.
Why a smoothing layer matters under insulation
Rigid insulation boards are designed to spread load across a flat, supported surface. Laid directly over lumpy hardcore or a poorly finished blockwork surface, boards can rock on high points, leaving unsupported gaps beneath them that compress unevenly once the screed and any floor loading are applied. A compacted sand blinding layer removes those high points and gaps, giving the insulation consistent support across its full area.
Protecting the DPM
Where a DPM sits between the hardcore and the insulation, sand blinding also protects the membrane from puncture by sharp stones in the hardcore below. A punctured DPM defeats its purpose long before anyone notices, since the failure isn't visible once the floor build-up is complete — this is one of those preparation steps where the value only becomes obvious if it's missed.
It's worth remembering that blinding and the DPM work together rather than one substituting for the other — a thicker blinding layer doesn't remove the need for a properly lapped, continuous membrane, and a robust DPM doesn't reduce the benefit of a smooth surface for it to sit on.
Deciding whether blinding is needed
Not every substrate needs a separate blinding layer — a well-compacted, carefully finished hardcore surface with no sharp protrusions may be judged adequate to receive the DPM and insulation directly. This is usually a decision made on site by the groundworker or specifier based on a visual and physical check of the surface, rather than a blanket rule applied regardless of condition.
Where there's any doubt, the relatively low cost of a thin blinding layer is generally cheap insurance against the much higher cost of investigating a soft patch or punctured membrane after the floor is finished.
Sequencing with other groundworks
Blinding is typically one of the last groundworks operations before the DPM, insulation and screed take over, so its condition at handover matters directly to the trades that follow. Keeping the blinded surface protected from further vehicle or plant traffic once it's laid and screeded level avoids having to redo the work before the DPM goes down.


Sand Blinding — the points that decide it
- Blinding sand fills small voids and irregularities in hardcore or blockwork so insulation boards sit flat rather than bridging over gaps
- It protects DPMs and insulation facings from being punctured by sharp stones or projections in the layer below
- The layer is typically compacted and screeded level rather than left loose, so it doesn't shift once loaded
- It's a relatively thin layer — its purpose is smoothing, not making up significant level difference, which is better addressed structurally
- Blinding should be dry and free of large particles or debris before the DPM and insulation are laid over it
- On some projects a geotextile membrane is used alongside or instead of blinding to separate hardcore from the DPM
- Blinding is typically laid to a shallow, consistent depth across the whole floor area rather than only in visibly rough patches
- Where hardcore has been well compacted and finished with care, some projects proceed without a separate blinding layer, subject to the specifier's judgement
- Any standing water on the blinding layer should be allowed to drain or be removed before the DPM and insulation are installed over it
