Liquid screed is typically installed once a building is at, or close to, a weathertight stage, precisely because both the pour itself and the drying period that follows need protection from external water. When that protection is incomplete — an unfinished roof, an open window opening, or a leaking rainwater good during a storm — water reaching the screed can cause a range of problems depending on the timing and volume involved.

Rain or standing water hitting a screed while it is still fluid or only recently poured can dilute the surface layer and wash out the finer cement or binder particles, leaving a weak, uneven or dusty surface once it has set. Water reaching an already-cured screed is a different problem: it can reintroduce significant moisture into a floor that had been drying towards its target level, effectively resetting or extending the drying programme.

Because the effects differ so much depending on the screed's state when the water arrived, establishing the timing of the water ingress relative to the pour date is central to understanding the likely consequences.

Water during the pour or early cure

If rain or water gets onto a liquid screed while it is still workable or only recently placed, it dilutes the mix locally, which can wash cement paste or fine particles toward the point of ingress and leave a patch that is either soft, uneven, or shows a different surface texture and colour once cured. In more severe cases, standing water can prevent that area from developing proper strength at all.

The extent of the problem generally correlates with how much water arrived and how long it sat on the surface before the screed had progressed far enough in its set to resist disruption.

Water after the screed has cured

Once a screed has cured and entered its drying phase, its main vulnerability to water shifts from surface disruption to renewed moisture uptake. A screed that had been drying steadily toward the moisture level needed for flooring can have that progress undone, in whole or in part, by a subsequent leak or flood, since the material will reabsorb available water.

In this situation, moisture testing that was previously satisfactory should not be relied upon without being repeated, since the whole basis for judging the floor ready for flooring has changed following the water ingress event.

Common sources of water reaching a screed

An unfinished or temporarily removed roof covering, an open window or door opening left unprotected during a storm, a burst supply pipe, or an overflowing bath or cylinder on an upper floor are all common routes by which water reaches a screed that was not designed to handle it. Each source suggests a slightly different volume and duration of exposure, which matters when judging the likely consequence.

A slow, small leak sustained over days can, in some respects, cause more re-wetting of a drying screed than a single larger event that is mopped up quickly, because the ongoing low-level moisture keeps replenishing what the screed would otherwise be losing through evaporation.

Getting the floor back on track after water ingress

Once the source of water has been stopped and any standing water removed, the priority is restoring good drying conditions — ventilation, reasonable ambient temperature, and time — before assuming the floor is back on its original schedule. Retesting with RH probes or a CM test appropriate to the screed type gives an objective read on where the floor now stands rather than relying on the original pre-ingress results.

Where surface damage from washed-out fines is visible, this generally needs addressing as a separate repair, since a weak or uneven surface layer will not resolve itself simply by allowing the floor more time to dry.

  • RH or CM testing should be repeated after any notable water ingress before flooring proceeds
  • Site weathertightness should be confirmed before scheduling a liquid screed pour
  • Photographing the extent and source of any ingress at the time helps later assessment considerably
  • A screed specialist can advise whether affected areas need retesting or can simply be left to dry further
