It's a distinctive and worrying sight for a homeowner: a crack in the floor that appears to trace the route of the underfloor heating pipes beneath. In most cases this is because the screed depth directly above the pipe was thinner than the surrounding slab, creating a locally weaker section that is more prone to shrinkage cracking as it dries.
This is different from random shrinkage cracking across a floor, which relates to overall drying and restraint rather than a specific weak line. Pipe-run cracking is a geometry problem, arising from how the screed thickness varies where it passes over pipe clips and manifolds.
Understanding the difference matters because the repair approach, and the reassurance you can give about the heating system itself, depend on correctly identifying the cause.
