Damp or Musty Smell Coming From a Liquid Screed Floor
A musty smell from a screeded floor is generally a moisture-related symptom, most often linked to trapped residual moisture, poor ventilation during drying, or an impermeable finish sealing dampness beneath it.
A distinct damp or musty odour associated with a floor, whether noticed during the drying period or after flooring has already been installed, is worth taking seriously as a symptom even when there is no visible staining or obvious moisture patch. Smell is often the first indicator of a moisture condition that has not yet become visually apparent, and tracking down its cause follows a broadly similar logical process to investigating visible damp.
In most cases, a musty smell relates to moisture that has not fully left the screed, whether because the drying period was too short, ventilation and temperature conditions during drying were inadequate, or a moisture-sensitive floor finish was installed before the screed had reached a suitable level for it. Sustained dampness in a cementitious or calcium sulfate material creates conditions that produce the characteristic musty odour, sometimes linked to microbial activity in trapped moisture or adjacent organic materials such as skirting or timber battens.
Because there can be several different underlying moisture sources contributing to the same symptom, working through them methodically — starting with the drying history of the floor — is generally more productive than guessing at a single cause.
Musty Smell From Screed — the points that decide it
- A musty smell is usually a moisture symptom, often preceding visible signs of damp

- Impermeable floor finishes installed too early can trap residual moisture beneath them

- Persistent odour after apparently adequate drying time warrants a proper moisture investigation rather than masking with ventilation alone
Linking the smell to the drying process
Liquid screed needs time, reasonable ambient temperature and adequate ventilation to release the water used in mixing, and any shortfall in these conditions extends the effective drying time even if the calendar time since pouring suggests the floor should be ready. Where flooring or an impermeable coating has already been applied over a screed that had not reached the required moisture level, that residual moisture becomes trapped rather than continuing to evaporate, creating persistently damp conditions beneath the finish that can produce a musty smell noticeable at the perimeter or through any gaps.
This is why moisture testing before flooring, using RH probes or a calcium carbide (CM) test as appropriate to the screed type, exists as an objective check rather than relying on a visual or time-based assumption that the floor is ready.
Ruling out other odour sources
Not every musty smell associated with a floor originates in the screed itself — adjacent skirting boards, timber battens, or insulation that has absorbed moisture can produce a similar odour, as can a nearby unrelated damp source such as a leak or condensation. Establishing whether the smell is strongest directly at floor level across the whole room, or more localised to a particular wall, edge or fitting, helps indicate whether the screed or an adjacent material is the more likely source.
Where underfloor heating is present, running the heating and monitoring whether the smell becomes more pronounced can also be informative, since gentle warming can help drive off residual moisture from a screed that has not fully dried, temporarily intensifying an odour that would otherwise be very faint at room temperature.

Screed Floor Smells Damp or Musty
Screed itself, once cured, has no odour. If you're picking up a musty or damp smell from a floor, the most common explanation is moisture trapped beneath a covering that was laid before the screed had dried to spec — creating a humid microclimate under carpet, underlay or vinyl where mould and bacteria can develop.
Less commonly, the smell is coming from something entirely separate — a subfloor void, an old timber joist that got wet during the works, or a drainage issue nearby — and the screed is simply where it's most noticeable underfoot.
We treat this as a moisture investigation first, not a screed replacement job, because in most cases the screed itself is sound and the fix is about removing trapped moisture and correcting whatever let a covering go down too early.

How we investigate
Lift a section — We check a small area of covering to see the screed surface condition directly.

Check for mould — Visible mould on underlay or covering backing confirms sustained trapped moisture.
Trace any external source — If the screed itself reads dry, we look at plumbing, ventilation and the building envelope instead.
