Once a screed has been poured, the next question is almost always about the finished floor going on top, and the honest answer is that there isn't one universal timeline. Tile, LVT, engineered timber, carpet and resin each tolerate different levels of residual moisture, and each has its own primer, membrane or decoupling requirements before installation can begin.
Getting this wrong doesn't just risk a cosmetic problem. Adhesive failure, timber cupping, resin blistering and mould beneath resilient coverings are all real, expensive consequences of laying a moisture-sensitive floor covering too early.
This page sets out the moisture criteria, typical timing and key preparation step for each major covering type, so the finishing trade and the screed installer are working from the same expectations.
Moisture criteria and typical readiness by covering

Preparation steps that vary by covering
- Tile — laitance removal on anhydrite screeds, correct primer or SBR bond coat, and appropriate flexible adhesive over any suspected movement
- LVT — full moisture test, self-levelling compound if a smoother finish is specified, and often a full spread adhesive or click system depending on subfloor
- Engineered timber — acclimatisation of the timber itself on site, plus a vapour control layer or DPM membrane even where the reading passes
- Carpet — a standard underlay is usually sufficient, though very damp screeds should still be avoided to protect the gripper and underlay from mould
- Resin — mechanical preparation, priming, and in some cases a full days-long conditioning period once the moisture reading is confirmed

Who is liable if flooring goes down wet
Liability depends on who tested the floor, and whether they told the next trade the result. If the screed installer hands over a written moisture test result showing the floor is ready and the flooring contractor proceeds, or if no test was requested at all before the flooring contractor laid the covering, the flooring contractor generally carries the risk for a subsequent failure.
If a screed installer signs off a floor as dry without proper testing, or a main contractor pushes a trade to proceed against advice to hit a programme date, liability can shift back up the chain. The single best protection for everyone is a dated, written moisture test result specific to the covering being laid, kept on file before any flooring goes down.
