Troubleshooting Cold Spots and Slow Warm-Up in Screeded UFH Floors

Cold spots and sluggish warm-up in a screeded UFH floor usually trace back to design, installation or commissioning rather than the screed itself.

When a screeded underfloor heating floor is slow to warm up or has noticeably cooler patches, it's tempting to assume the screed is at fault, but in our experience the underlying cause is far more often related to pipe layout, insulation, commissioning or floor covering than to the screed material itself. Liquid screed's even, close contact with the pipe generally gives good heat transfer, so persistent cold spots usually point to something specific in the design or installation rather than the pour.

Working through the likely causes methodically is more productive than guessing. Pipe spacing, insulation continuity, air in the system, balancing between loops, and floor covering thermal resistance are all common contributors, and each leaves slightly different symptoms. A cold patch in one specific area often points to a local pipe spacing or insulation issue, while a whole room that's generally sluggish to heat is more often a balancing, flow temperature or covering issue.

We're not usually the party who diagnoses live heating faults after handover, since that sits with the heating installer or commissioning engineer, but we're often asked what role the screed itself could play, and it helps to understand where screed sits in that chain of possible causes.

Troubleshooting Cold Spots & Slow Warm-Up — the points that decide it

  • Cold spots are more often caused by pipe layout, insulation gaps or commissioning than by the screed itself
  • Localised cold patches often point to wider pipe spacing or a missing section of edge or floor insulation
  • Whole-room slow warm-up more often reflects loop balancing, flow temperature or floor covering resistance
  • Air trapped in a loop after commissioning can cause uneven heat distribution across a room
  • Thick or insulating floor coverings such as deep carpet with underlay resist heat transfer regardless of screed quality
  • A slow, gradual first heat-up regime is different from ongoing slow response once the floor is properly commissioned
  • Diagnosing a live heating issue after handover is usually led by the heating installer, not the screed installer
  • Manifold flow meter settings should be checked as part of diagnosing a persistently underperforming zone

Working through likely causes

If a cold spot appears in a specific, repeatable location, it's worth checking that area's pipe layout against the design drawing, since a wider-than-designed gap between pipe runs, or an uninsulated void such as a stairwell understorey, will show up as a locally cooler patch regardless of screed quality. Similarly, any gap in edge insulation around the room's perimeter can create a cold strip near external walls.

If the whole room is slow to reach temperature rather than showing a specific cold patch, the more likely causes are the flow temperature and balancing set at the manifold, air trapped in that loop, or a floor covering with higher thermal resistance than the design assumed, such as a thick underlay beneath carpet.

Where screed sits in the picture

Because liquid screed flows around and encapsulates the pipe closely, it isn't usually the limiting factor in heat transfer compared with a poorly bonded traditional screed with air voids. That said, cover depth over the pipe does affect response time — a deeper-than-necessary covering will be slower to respond to temperature changes even once fully commissioned, which is one reason accurate screed depth to the design specification matters.

If cold spots or slow warm-up persist after checking pipe layout, insulation, balancing and floor covering, it's worth having the system re-commissioned and checked by the heating installer, since screed depth on its own rarely explains symptoms localised to specific areas.
