The position of the manifold cabinet is one of the earlier decisions on any underfloor heating project, yet it has a direct bearing on how the liquid screed installation is planned. Pipe circuits run out from the manifold to cover each zone, so its location affects how evenly loop lengths can be kept and how tidy the floor build-up looks once boards or a cabinet recess are fitted.
On a liquid screed job we work from the heating designer's manifold position and layout drawing, checking that circuit lengths from that point are broadly balanced so that flow rates across zones can be set sensibly at commissioning. Very long or very short loops relative to others in the same manifold group can make balancing harder later.
We also need clear access to the manifold area during the pipe-laying and pressure-testing stages, and a route for pipes to leave the screed zone cleanly through the floor build-up without unsupported bends close to the cabinet, which is where kinks are most likely to occur if care is not taken.
Manifold Positioning — the points that decide it
- Manifold position is normally fixed by the heating designer before pipe first fix begins
- Pipe circuit lengths from the manifold should be reasonably balanced within each zone
- Access to the manifold cabinet is needed throughout pipe laying and testing
- Pipes should leave the screed zone without tight, unsupported bends near the cabinet
- Poor manifold positioning can complicate later balancing and fault-finding
- Cabinet recesses or boxing should be agreed before the floor build-up is finalised
- Clear labelling of circuits at the manifold helps at commissioning stage
- A manifold serving several small zones benefits from a fairly central position to keep circuit lengths comparable
- Flow meters on each manifold port allow individual circuits to be balanced once the system is commissioned

Why balance matters
Circuits fed from the same manifold share a common flow and return, so if one loop is considerably longer than the others in that group, achieving even heat output across the floor can be harder without more detailed balancing work at commissioning.
We flag any obviously uneven pipe runs against the design layout before pouring so the heating designer or installer can review whether an additional manifold or zone split would suit the room layout better.
Site coordination
Because the manifold sits at the boundary between the wet trades and the heating installer's later commissioning work, we coordinate timing so that pressure testing, screed pouring, and eventual system fill and commissioning all happen in a sensible sequence without the cabinet area being disturbed part-way through.
Flow meters and balancing at commissioning
Most manifolds include a flow meter on each port, letting the commissioning engineer set relative flow rates between circuits to compensate for differences in loop length or output requirement. Reasonably balanced circuit lengths from a well-chosen manifold position make this balancing exercise more straightforward than trying to compensate for a widely uneven layout after the fact.
