Mezzanine floors and raised access floor systems are typically built from steel decking or panels supported on a grid of legs or beams, which behave quite differently from a ground-bearing slab. They're designed to carry load, but they also deflect under it to a far greater degree than concrete, and that flexibility has direct implications for whether and how a liquid screed can be used on top.

Before specifying a screed for this kind of structure, the deck's deflection limits, point loading and any manufacturer guidance on floor finishes need reviewing, since a screed poured onto a deck that deflects more than expected is at risk of cracking even if the mix itself is sound.

Working with the structural engineer or the deck manufacturer at the specification stage, rather than after the screed has already been ordered, gives the best chance of matching screed depth, reinforcement and jointing to the deck's actual behaviour under load.

Why deflection is the key question

Concrete slabs are treated as effectively rigid for screeding purposes, but a steel-framed mezzanine or access floor is a genuinely flexible structure by design. A liquid screed poured on top needs to accommodate that flexing without cracking, which usually means confirming the deck's deflection performance with whoever designed the structure before committing to a screed depth or reinforcement approach.

Deflection that would be entirely unremarkable on a heavily loaded structural beam can still be enough to crack an unreinforced screed if the two aren't designed together, which is why this conversation needs to happen before ordering material rather than being treated as a detail to resolve on site.

Loading and joint coordination

Point loads from racking legs, machinery feet or concentrated storage need to be checked against both the structural rating of the deck and the screed's own ability to spread that load without local failure. Movement joints in the screed are also usually coordinated with the deck's own structural joints, so the two move together rather than the screed cracking independently of the structure beneath it.

Where racking or machinery layouts are known in advance, it's worth reviewing load positions against the deck's structural grid, since a heavy point load landing between supports behaves differently to one landing directly over a beam.

Reinforcement and screed design for flexible decks

Because a mezzanine or access floor deck moves more than a ground slab, screeds specified for these structures more commonly include reinforcement — either a mesh or a fibre-reinforced mix — to help the screed accommodate minor flexing without cracking. This is a different default assumption to a typical ground-bearing floating screed, where reinforcement is less routinely needed.

The screed depth itself may also be reviewed against the deck's specific deflection figures rather than relying on a generic minimum, since a deck with unusually large deflection under load may call for a different approach than a stiffer system.

Confirming the deck is ready before the pour

Before a screed is poured onto any steel deck, it's worth confirming that all structural fixings — bolted connections, welds, and the deck's bearing onto its supporting beams — are complete and have been signed off. A screed poured over a structure with unfinished or unchecked fixings adds weight to a deck whose final structural condition hasn't been confirmed.

This coordination is usually straightforward on new-build mezzanines built as part of one project, but is worth double-checking on retrofit mezzanines added into an existing building, where structural sign-off may involve a different set of contractors to the screed installation.
