Liquid screed's self-levelling, pumpable nature allows large areas to be poured in a single continuous session more readily than traditional screed, but there are still practical limits set by pump capacity, drying time between adjoining pours, and the layout of the building itself that can require the work to be split into more than one pour.

Where a floor area does need to be split, the position of the resulting daywork joint and the sequence in which areas are poured has a bearing on the finished floor's performance and appearance, so this benefits from being planned at specification stage rather than decided reactively on the pour day.

This is particularly relevant on larger commercial floors, multi-storey projects poured level by level, or where access constraints mean the screed pump cannot reach the entire area from a single position.

Why sequencing is worth planning ahead

A liquid screed pour is a continuous, time-pressured operation once it starts, and the crew's ability to work efficiently depends on having a clear plan for where the pour will start, finish and, if needed, pause. Deciding this in real time on the pour day increases the risk of a poorly placed or badly finished joint.

Specifying the intended sequence in advance, informed by the building's layout, access points and any known pump capacity constraints, allows the contractor to plan labour, material delivery and equipment positioning around a joint location chosen for good reason rather than convenience on the day.

Positioning the joint itself

A daywork joint ideally coincides with a movement joint or a natural change in the floor, such as a doorway or change of room, so that the joint does not become a visible or structurally awkward line running through an open space. Where this is not possible, the joint should at least be planned rather than falling wherever the pump happened to run out of reach.

Edge preparation at a daywork joint differs depending on how much time has passed since the first pour; a joint poured within the same working session is treated differently to one against an edge that has been curing for several days, and the specification or the contractor's method statement should reflect which situation applies.

Sequencing on multi-storey or phased projects

On projects poured level by level, the sequence needs to account for programme dependencies elsewhere in the building, such as when a floor needs to be accessible for other trades, as well as practical matters like whether pumping equipment and stored screed bags on a lower floor could affect the structure's loading before the floor above is complete.

Underfloor heating manifolds and pipe loop zoning add a further layer of coordination, since a pour sequence that splits a single heating zone across two separate pour sessions can complicate later commissioning if not planned with the heating installer's zoning in mind.

Recording the sequence as it actually happened

Once a floor has been split into more than one pour, a simple sketch marking where each session started and finished, dated against the batch delivered, is worth keeping alongside the rest of the project file, since a joint that later shows movement is far easier to investigate if its age and position are already documented.
