Minimum cover over underfloor heating pipes
A focused look at minimum cover requirements over underfloor heating pipework, distinct from overall floor depth, and why the distinction matters.
Minimum cover and overall screed depth are related but not the same thing, and confusing the two is a common source of dispute on underfloor heating projects. Minimum cover refers specifically to the thickness of screed sitting above the crown of the heating pipe, protecting it and giving it enough thermal mass to spread heat evenly.
Because liquid screed flows around pipework rather than being tamped over it, achieving consistent minimum cover depends heavily on the pipes being fixed down securely before the pour, so they cannot float upward in the liquid material. Why cover is checked separately from depth
Overall screed depth can be correct on average across a floor while still leaving some areas with too little cover, if the pipe has crept upward or the substrate has minor undulations. This is why cover is checked as its own item during pre-pour inspection, using a straightedge and depth gauge at multiple points rather than relying on the nominal design figure alone.
Recording this check, with photographs where practical, gives both installer and client a clear record of the floor build-up before it disappears under the finish.
Achieving consistent cover on site
Consistent cover starts with secure pipe fixing at correct centres, using clips or a fixing rail appropriate to the insulation or substrate type. Loose or widely spaced fixings are the most common cause of pipe flotation during a liquid pour, since the buoyant force on the pipe is significant even in a self-levelling material with good flow characteristics.
Level and flatness of the substrate beneath the pipework also affects cover, since a dipped or humped base changes the pipe's height relative to the finished surface even where fixing is sound.
Checking cover before the floor is sealed up
A depth gauge check at several points along each pipe run, done before the pour and photographed, is the only way to prove cover was adequate once the finish is down.
Where the manifold layout makes fixing awkward, taking extra readings in that zone specifically is worth the ten minutes it costs.
Cover over UFH pipes — the points that decide it
- Minimum cover is measured from the top (crown) of the pipe to the finished screed surface, not from the substrate.
- Inadequate cover risks pipe damage, uneven heat distribution and visible tracking of pipe layout through the finish.
- Excessive cover increases thermal lag, slowing the system's response to temperature adjustments.
- Pipes must be securely clipped or stapled to prevent flotation during the liquid pour.
- A pre-pour check of pipe fixing and pressure testing should be recorded before screed arrives on site.
- Manifold and pipe transition areas often need particular attention as fixing is harder to achieve neatly.
