It is tempting to specify screed depth by habit — a standard figure used on the last few domestic jobs — without asking what the floor will actually be carrying. Loading is one of the primary drivers of required depth, alongside build-up type, and a figure that is perfectly adequate under a lounge carpet may be inadequate under a home gym, a wine store, or a garage conversion used for a workshop.

This page sets out a way of thinking about depth that starts from anticipated load rather than from room type alone, which is particularly important in conversions and mixed-use spaces where 'domestic' does not automatically mean 'light duty'.

Working from load to depth, not room label to depth

A more reliable approach than working from a generic room label is to ask what will actually sit on and move across the floor: furniture, vehicles, static equipment, foot traffic patterns, and any point loads from fixed items. This gives a realistic loading picture that can then be matched to an appropriate strength class and depth, rather than assuming a single domestic figure fits every room in a house.

This matters most in conversions and change-of-use projects, where a space's function may differ significantly from what a standard house design would assume — a garage becoming a home gym, or an outbuilding becoming a workshop, for example.

Depth and strength class as a pair

Depth cannot fully compensate for an inadequate strength class, and a higher strength class cannot fully compensate for inadequate depth — the two work together. A specification that only states one without reference to the other is incomplete, and a specifier should always confirm that the pairing is appropriate for the anticipated load, not just that each figure individually looks reasonable.

Moisture path matters as much as load path

A garage converted to a home gym often sits on an older slab without a modern damp-proof membrane, and that gap needs closing before loading assumptions are finalised.

Adding a membrane retrospectively can itself add a few millimetres to the build-up, which should be checked against the depth figure already chosen for the new use.

Load and depth — the points that decide it

  1. 1Room type is a starting point for loading assumptions, not a guarantee of what the floor will actually experience.
  2. 2Home gyms, workshops, and storage-heavy rooms can impose loads well above typical domestic assumptions.
  3. 3Point loads from heavy fixed equipment need separate consideration from general distributed loading.
  4. 4BS EN 13813 strength classes and BS 8204 depth guidance work together — depth and strength class are specified as a pair, not independently.
  5. 5Future flexibility of room use is worth considering at design stage, since screed depth is very difficult to change once installed.
  6. 6Garages, home offices, and annexes converted from non-habitable space often carry different loads than the original design assumed.
