Liquid Screed for Veterinary Practices and Clinics

A flat, dependable screed base for veterinary practices, clinics and consulting-room fit-outs, chosen to support hygienic, washable floor finishes.

Veterinary practices and small clinics have similar floor priorities to larger healthcare buildings, but on a smaller scale: consulting rooms, treatment areas and prep rooms all need a flat, sound base that will support seamless, washable floor finishes without joints or weak points that could harbour dirt.

Liquid screed suits this well because it self-levels into small, often irregularly shaped rooms and around existing partitions in a way that is harder to achieve consistently with a hand-applied mix, particularly in older buildings being converted for clinical use. Room layouts in a converted building rarely line up conveniently with a regular grid, so a pumpable, self-levelling material has a clear practical advantage.

Many of these projects are fit-outs within existing retail or commercial premises rather than new-build units, so assessing the existing floor and planning access for a relatively small but precise pour is part of getting the job right. Procurement is typically through a fit-out contractor engaged by the practice or a healthcare property specialist, and specification decisions often reflect infection control and cleaning requirements as much as general flooring practice.

Supporting hygienic floor finishes

Clinical and veterinary environments typically specify vinyl, safety flooring or resin finishes that need to be laid without lippage or unevenness to remain properly washable and hygienic. A flat liquid screed base is central to achieving that standard finish.

Treatment and prep rooms in particular often need coved skirting details and seamless floor-to-wall junctions for infection control purposes, and a flat, accurately finished screed makes it easier for the flooring installer to achieve a clean, continuous run without patching around an uneven substrate.

Working within existing buildings

Many veterinary and clinic fit-outs take place inside existing retail units or converted buildings rather than purpose-built premises. We assess the existing slab and room layout before confirming whether a bonded overlay or a different screed build-up is the right approach.

Where partition walls define small rooms that do not align with the existing floor's construction joints or level changes, our survey identifies these early so the pour can be planned room by room rather than assuming a single uniform floor plate.

Drainage and washdown areas

Treatment rooms, wash bays and kennel or animal holding areas sometimes need falls to a drainage point so washdown water is directed correctly rather than pooling. Where this is specified, we agree the fall and drainage layout with the fit-out designer before the pour.

Plumbing first fix for sinks, drains and any specialist equipment needs to be complete and protected before the screed goes down, so coordinating this sequence with the mechanical contractor avoids delays or the need to break back into a finished floor.

Meeting a registration or opening timeline

Veterinary practices and clinics often work to a fixed opening date tied to staff recruitment, equipment delivery or a practice's registration process. We agree pour and drying timings early so the flooring finish and remaining fit-out trades can follow on without last-minute compression.

Because these are typically smaller floor areas than a large commercial fit-out, drying times are often shorter, but the finish tolerance expected for hygienic flooring means we still allow a realistic period before flooring installation begins.
