Liquid Screed for Pool Houses and Spa Rooms

Pool house and spa floors combine constant humidity, standing water and chemical splash with a need for gentle, even underfloor heat, making screed build-up a critical part of the design.

A domestic pool house or spa room asks more of its floor than almost any other residential space. The screed sits above a structure that may be partly below ground or adjacent to a large body of water, it must tolerate near-constant humidity and periodic wetting, and it usually needs to distribute underfloor heating evenly so bare feet are comfortable stepping off tiles or stone. Getting the build-up wrong shows up as damp patches, cold spots, or movement in the floor covering within a short space of time.

Falls to drainage are a particular focus around pool surrounds, shower areas and plant rooms, where standing water has to be directed to gullies rather than pooling at door thresholds or against walls. Liquid screed can be laid to falls, but this needs to be planned and set out before the pour, working from the drainage layout and the finished floor level required by the pool coping or tiling build-up. Plant rooms housing pumps, filtration and dosing equipment bring their own considerations, including resistance to occasional chemical spillage and a floor that can be hosed down and cleaned without deteriorating.

Underfloor heating is common in these spaces because it keeps the floor surface warm without competing for wall space with radiators, and a well-bonded liquid screed gives even, responsive heat distribution across the poured area. Insulation beneath the screed reduces heat loss into the substrate and helps manage the humid, temperature-stable environment these rooms are designed around.

These projects are usually delivered as part of a wider extension or new-build package, procured through a main contractor or specialist pool builder rather than commissioned as a standalone item, so our involvement is coordinated with groundworks, tanking and heating trades from an early stage. Because the space combines several specialist elements — waterproofing, drainage, heating and often bespoke joinery or glazing — the screed pour date depends on several other trades reaching the right point in their own sequence before we can commit to a slot.

Underfloor heating and insulation

Spa and pool spaces are ideal candidates for underfloor heating because a warm floor is part of the comfort expected in these rooms, and liquid screed's close contact with heating pipework gives efficient, even heat transfer with fewer cold spots than a poorly bonded alternative. The heating design should account for the finished floor covering, since dense stone or tile has different thermal response to timber-effect or resin finishes.

Insulation beneath the screed reduces downward heat loss, particularly important where the room sits over a ground floor slab or an unheated void, and it also helps limit the amount of energy needed to maintain a constant, comfortable temperature in a room that is often used for long periods at a stable warmth.

Plant rooms and chemical exposure

Areas housing pool pumps, heat exchangers, filtration and chemical dosing equipment are usually screeded to the same falls-and-drainage principle as the pool surround, so any leaks or overflows are directed away from equipment and towards a gully rather than sitting on the floor. The finish specified for these areas should be resistant to occasional splashes of pool chemicals and easy to keep clean.

Because plant rooms are functional rather than show spaces, the finish is often simpler than the adjoining spa room, but the screed still needs to be laid with the same attention to falls, damp-proofing and structural preparation to avoid problems that would be difficult to access once equipment is installed.
