Cover depth over UFH pipework isn't a nice-to-have figure on a datasheet — it's what stops the pipe run showing through the floor as a hot stripe, and it's what stops the screed cracking along the line of the pipe under thermal cycling.

Under-depth pours usually happen because the insulation wasn't laid flat, the pipes weren't clipped down tightly enough, or the pour depth was measured before checking the actual high points of the pipe grid rather than the low points.

  • Visible "striping" — a warmer band directly over each pipe run once the heating is on
  • Cracking that tracks the exact line of the pipe as thermal cycling stresses a thin section
  • Reduced heat spread across the floor, making the room feel unevenly warm
  • In severe cases, exposed or nicked pipework discovered during grinding or drilling later

How we check cover depth before it becomes a problem

    Pre-pour pipe survey

    We check clip-down and measure pipe height at multiple points across the grid, not just one spot.

    Datum vs pipe high points

    The pour depth is set against the highest point of the pipe run, not the average.

    Depth pins during pour

    Physical depth pins confirm actual poured thickness as the screed goes down.

    Where there's any doubt, we can core-check a discreet spot to confirm actual cover achieved.

What we do if cover turns out short

If a shortfall is caught before the pour has gone off, we can top up locally while the screed is still workable. If it's discovered after the fact, the fix depends on severity — sometimes an additional thin levelling topping is enough, and sometimes the affected area needs lifting and re-pouring.

We'd always rather delay a pour by half a day to fix a pipe clip-down issue than hand over a floor with marginal cover depth.
