One spreads load and sets a flat finish; the other actually carries load as part of the structure. Confusing the two on a spec sheet is a genuine risk.

A liquid screed is a non-structural layer — it sits on top of insulation or a structural slab, spreads point loads a little and provides a flat surface for finishes, but it doesn't form part of the calculated structure. A structural topping is different: it's designed by an engineer to work compositely with the slab or beams beneath it, carrying real load.
The confusion usually arises on beam-and-block or precast floors, where a topping is sometimes required for structural composite action, and a separate screed may then be needed above that for level and UFH. Getting the sequence and specification right matters.

Liquid screed
- Non-structural, floats or bonds on top of the sub-floor
- Provides level and thermal encapsulation for UFH
- Specified by the flooring/M&E requirements
- Fibre-reinforced as standard
Structural topping
- Engineer-designed, forms part of the load path
- Reinforced with mesh to specific structural calculations
- Required for composite action on some beam-and-block/precast floors
- Poured to the engineer's exact thickness and mix spec
