Traditional sand-and-cement screeds were often reinforced with steel mesh laid at mid-depth, tied and lapped like a mini slab. Modern liquid screeds almost always use polypropylene or steel micro-fibres blended into the mix instead, and the difference in outcome is significant.

It's not simply old-fashioned versus modern, though — mesh still gets specified on some structural toppings and heavy commercial floors, and understanding why helps make sense of the choice on your job.

Why fibre became the default

Liquid screeds are pumped and self-level; a fixed mesh layer gets in the way of that flow and is genuinely hard to keep at the correct depth once wet material is moving across it. Fibres solve the same shrinkage-cracking problem without any of that interference, which is why every major liquid screed manufacturer now specifies fibre as standard.

The fibres don't add structural bending strength in the way mesh does — they control micro-cracking during curing rather than carrying load. For a floating domestic or light-commercial floor sat on insulation, that's exactly what's needed and no more.

If you're pouring a structural topping that has to carry point loads or span over an existing slab with poor bond, mesh earns its place. For a standard floating or bonded liquid screed under UFH, fibre is the right call every time.
