Laboratory floors within university buildings sit beneath finishes chosen for chemical resistance, but the screed underneath still has to provide a flat, stable, well-prepared base that supports those finishes reliably over years of heavy use.
Labs are often dense with services below and above the floor, and some house equipment sensitive to vibration or level, both of which need coordinating into the floor build-up from an early stage.
University laboratories — the points that decide it
- The final floor finish in a lab is usually chosen for chemical resistance, so the screed needs preparing to the flatness and moisture condition that specific finish requires.
- Service penetrations for gas, vacuum, water and power outlets are typically dense in lab floors and need careful coordination so the screed pour isn't repeatedly disrupted by late changes.
- Where sensitive analytical equipment is to be installed, floor flatness and, in some cases, isolation from vibration transmitted through the structure may need specific consideration.
- Refurbishing an existing lab within a working faculty building often has a tight window between terms, similar in principle to school holiday working but with more complex services to reinstate.
- Fume cupboard bases and other fixed equipment plinths need coordinating with the screed level so upstands and services line up correctly.

Laboratory floors typically carry more service penetrations per square metre than most other building types, covering gas, vacuum, compressed air, data and power in addition to standard drainage, so the screed programme depends heavily on services being fixed and coordinated before the pour rather than added afterwards.
Working within academic term windows
Where a lab refurbishment has to fit between terms, the drying period for the screed sits alongside a long list of specialist fit-out tasks including fume cupboards, bench installation and services commissioning, so an early, realistic drying allowance helps protect the rest of that programme.
