Data centres, server rooms and plant rooms depend on a flat, dimensionally stable floor slab beneath any raised access flooring or plant bases. The screed forms an important part of this build-up, providing the level surface that pedestal-supported raised floors and heavy plant equipment are set out from.

Loading in these environments can be significant and concentrated, whether from server racks, air handling units, chillers or standby power equipment, so the screed specification needs to reflect the point loads and any vibration associated with the plant involved.

Because downtime in an operational data centre or plant room can be costly to the client's operations, sequencing and coordination of screed works with other trades — including cable containment and cooling infrastructure — needs particular care during both new build and refurbishment projects.

Supporting raised access floors

Raised access flooring systems rely on a flat, stable base slab for their pedestals to sit on consistently. A well-finished screed reduces the risk of pedestal levelling issues and helps the raised floor perform reliably once server racks and cabling are installed above it.

Plant loading and coordination

Plant rooms often contain heavy, sometimes vibrating equipment such as chillers, generators and pumps. The screed and underlying slab need to be specified with these loads in mind, and installation sequenced around plant delivery and other services coordination to suit the wider programme.

Data Centres & Plant Rooms — the points that decide it

  • Flat, level base suited to raised access flooring pedestals
  • Specified to suit concentrated point loads from racks and plant
  • Coordinated with cable containment and cooling infrastructure routes
  • Suitable for both new-build facilities and phased refurbishment works
  • Attention to vibration and loading characteristics of heavy plant items
  • Sequencing planned around operational constraints where relevant
