Phenolic Insulation Boards Under Liquid Screed
Phenolic foam boards offer some of the lowest U-values per millimetre of any rigid insulation, useful in the most depth-constrained floor build-ups.
Phenolic foam insulation sits at the premium end of rigid board insulation used under liquid screed, offering very low thermal conductivity per millimetre — often better than PIR — which makes it a candidate where floor build-up depth is under real pressure, such as retrofit projects matching into existing thresholds.
It's less commonly specified than PIR or EPS for straightforward new-build floors simply because the cost premium isn't justified once depth constraints are less severe, but where it is used, the same jointing and handling discipline applies as with other foil-faced boards.
Phenolic foam achieves its very low thermal conductivity through a fine, closed-cell structure, and manufacturers typically pair it with a foil facing similar to PIR, both to improve performance slightly and to give the board a durable surface for handling and taping on site.

When the depth saving matters
The case for phenolic insulation is almost always about millimetres — a retrofit where an existing door threshold, staircase bottom step or adjoining floor level leaves very little room to build up a new floor. In that scenario, the extra cost per square metre of phenolic buys back critical depth that PIR or EPS can't match at the same thickness, and it can be the difference between meeting a level threshold and not.
Where depth isn't constrained, the cost premium rarely stacks up against simply using a thicker, cheaper insulation to achieve the same thermal result.
Site handling
As with PIR, phenolic board edges and facings need reasonable care during handling and cutting, and any cut or damaged facing should be re-taped before the screed pour. The board's higher unit cost also makes it worth planning cutting layouts carefully to minimise waste.
Because phenolic is a more specialist product than PIR or EPS, lead times from suppliers can be longer, so it's worth confirming availability early in the programme rather than assuming it can be sourced at short notice close to the pour date.
Comparing phenolic against PIR on a real project
The practical comparison usually comes down to a straightforward calculation — how many millimetres does the project actually need to save, and does the cost difference between phenolic and PIR at the reduced thickness justify itself against the value of that reclaimed depth. On a retrofit chasing a level threshold across an existing doorway, the answer is often yes; on a new build with generous floor-to-ceiling heights already designed in, it's usually no.
Getting an accurate depth budget from the architect or designer early in the process avoids specifying a premium insulation product for a constraint that could have been resolved another way, such as adjusting the structural floor level at design stage.
Compatibility with the rest of the floor build-up
Phenolic board is compatible with the same DPMs, separating layers and screed types as PIR, since the interface it presents to the layers above and below is functionally similar. The main practical difference on site is handling care around its facing and the need to plan for potentially longer lead times, rather than any fundamentally different installation method.
