Planning Access and Hose Routes on Constrained Sites
Constrained sites — terraced houses, narrow plots, upper floors and restricted parking — need pump access and hose routing worked out before the pour date, not on the day.
Liquid screed is delivered by pump, and getting the pump close enough to the building, or routing hose far enough into it, is one of the first practical questions on any constrained site. Terraced properties with no side access, narrow lanes, restricted parking, and upper-floor pours all raise slightly different access challenges that are worth resolving before a pour date is fixed.
None of these constraints usually rule out a liquid screed altogether, but they can affect how the pump is positioned, how much hose is needed, and how long the setup takes on the day. On a genuinely tight site, the setup time can end up being a larger share of the visit than the pour itself, which is worth factoring into how the day is planned.
Access planning is best done with an accurate description of the actual site, including anything a photo or plan might not convey — a low archway, a tight turning circle, or a shared driveway that's occasionally blocked by neighbouring vehicles — rather than relying on general assumptions about what a pump crew can typically manage.
Terraced and narrow-plot access
Many properties in and around Exeter have limited or no side access, meaning the hose has to run from the street, sometimes through the property itself, to reach the pour area. This is routine for screed contractors, but it does mean the route through the building — hallways, staircases, internal doors — needs to be clear and protected on the day, and any pinch points identified beforehand.
On narrow streets, checking parking restrictions and likely space for the pump vehicle in advance avoids delays caused by having to find alternative standing on the day itself.
Upper floors and multi-storey pours
Pumping screed to an upper floor is a common requirement on new-build and renovation projects, and is usually achieved by running hose up an external scaffold, through a stair core, or via a boom pump where site conditions allow. Each route has different implications for how long the hose is, how it's supported, and what protection is needed for finishes along the way, so it's worth agreeing the route with the screed contractor as part of early planning rather than leaving it until pump day.
Where scaffold access is used, it also needs to remain in place and safely usable for the duration of the pour, which is worth confirming with whoever manages the scaffold if it's due to be struck or altered around the same time.
Measuring the physical constraints accurately
Details that don't always come across in a general description — a low garage archway, a tight 90-degree turn into a driveway, an overhanging tree branch, or a narrow gap between neighbouring walls — can make the difference between a straightforward pump visit and one that needs a different approach. Providing accurate measurements, or arranging a short site visit, avoids the pump crew arriving to find the vehicle simply can't get where it was expected to.
This is particularly worth doing on older properties and infill plots, where access was never designed with modern plant and machinery in mind, and where the constraint may not be obvious until a vehicle is actually attempting the route.
Coordinating with neighbours on shared or restricted access
Where a pump needs to stand on a shared driveway, a private road, or a section of street used by neighbouring properties, a short conversation in advance — rather than turning up unannounced on the day — tends to avoid last-minute friction. This is particularly relevant for longer pours, where a vehicle may need to occupy the space for several hours.
On some sites it's worth agreeing a specific time window with neighbours if their own access could be temporarily restricted, so the pour can proceed without an unexpected dispute over parking or blocked driveways part-way through the day.
Access & Hose Routes — the points that decide it
- Pump vehicles need a realistic parking and standing area close to the building, which should be checked against local parking restrictions in advance
- Long hose runs from the pump to the pour area are achievable but take longer to set up and may need routing through the building rather than around it
- Upper-floor pours may require the hose to be run up an external scaffold or through an internal stairwell, both of which need planning with the main contractor
- Narrow terraced access can limit the size of pump that can attend, which is worth flagging early rather than discovering on the pour day
- Any shared access, private roads or neighbouring properties affected by parking or hose routing are worth discussing with neighbours ahead of time
- Where vehicle access simply isn't possible, longer hose runs or, in some cases, a different pump setup can usually resolve it, but this needs early conversation rather than a same-day workaround
- Low archways, overhanging trees or tight turning circles should be measured and described accurately, since these details are easy to miss on a general site description
- A dry run or site visit ahead of the pour date is worth arranging on genuinely tight or unusual sites, rather than relying solely on photographs
