Using a Dehumidifier to Dry Screed
A dehumidifier can genuinely rescue a tight programme — but only if it's brought in at the right stage of the screed's cure.

When a build programme is squeezed and a screed needs to dry faster than natural ventilation will manage, a dehumidifier is often the first thing suggested. Used properly, it works — pulling humidity out of the air encourages faster evaporation from the screed surface, and can shave a meaningful chunk off a drying timeline.
Used at the wrong time, though, it can do more harm than good. Running aggressive dehumidification on a screed that's still within its initial cure period can dry the surface too fast relative to the body of the screed, leading to surface crazing, curling at edges, or a case-hardened top layer that traps moisture underneath and gives a false-dry reading later.
The technique is straightforward once you know the sequence: let the screed cure first, then dehumidify to accelerate the drying phase — not the other way round.
How dehumidified drying should be sequenced

Allow the initial cure period
Cement-based screeds typically need around 7 days, anhydrite longer, before mechanical drying should begin — check the specific product datasheet.

Introduce the dehumidifier gradually
Start at a moderate extraction rate rather than maximum, to avoid shocking the surface with too rapid moisture loss.

Maintain gentle background heat
Combining low-level heat with dehumidification is more effective and more even than dehumidification alone.

Test regularly, not just at the end
Track moisture readings through the process so you can see genuine progress rather than assuming a set run-time equals a dry floor.
Signs a dehumidifier has been used too aggressively or too early
- Fine surface cracking or crazing appearing within days of starting
- Edges of the screed lifting or curling slightly
- A moisture reading that looks dry at the surface but rises again after light sanding
- Visible dust or a chalky surface where the top has dried much faster than the body
