Sand-and-cement screed has been the default UK flooring sub-base for decades — a sand, cement and water mix, barrowed in, compacted and hand-floated in bays. It still has a place. But on almost every UFH job, and on most renovations with a tight programme, liquid screed has taken over for good reason.

The two aren't really competing on quality of finished floor once cured; they're competing on speed, flatness, depth and how well they suit modern heating systems.

Below is the comparison we give clients who assume sand-and-cement is the 'normal' choice and haven't priced liquid screed against it yet.

What doesn't change between the two

  • Both need a correctly detailed DPM and perimeter isolation
  • Both need adequate drying time before floor coverings go down
  • Both can accept tile, LVT, carpet or engineered wood once dry
  • Neither is a structural slab replacement — both sit on a sound sub-base

The decision test

If your floor area is under roughly 15m² with no UFH and a hand trade is already booked, sand-and-cement is a reasonable, low-fuss choice.

If UFH is anywhere in the build-up, or the area is larger than a single room, or the programme has less than a week of float in it, liquid screed wins on every practical measure — and usually on cost once labour days are counted properly.
