Every screed has to reach a target relative humidity before floor coverings go down, and how you get there — patiently, or with mechanical help — has real cost and risk implications that don't always get discussed at quote stage.

Natural drying relies on ambient temperature, airflow and time. Force drying brings in dehumidifiers, heaters or trace heating on the UFH circuit to accelerate moisture loss. Both work; they're just suited to different pressures on a build.

How a force-dry sequence typically runs

    Screed reaches walk-on strength (24–48h) before any forced heat or airflow begins.

    Introduce gentle heat

    UFH trace-heat or space heaters brought up gradually — no rapid temperature spikes.

    Dehumidify and ventilate

    Dehumidifiers run continuously, windows/doors managed to control airflow without draughts.

    Test RH regularly

    Hygrometer readings taken at multiple points and depths until consistently under 75% RH.

Force drying earns its cost when the programme genuinely can't absorb natural drying time — a fit-out deadline, a handover date, a knock-on trade that's booked. If time isn't the binding constraint, natural drying is the lower-risk, lower-cost route. Test it against your actual handover date, not a general sense of urgency.
