Specifying Primers and Adhesive Compatibility Over Liquid Screed

Primers and adhesives used over liquid screed must be compatible with both the screed type and the flooring finish, and this should be confirmed at specification stage.

The surface of a liquid screed is not automatically ready to receive any floor finish adhesive straight from the manufacturer's shelf. Calcium sulfate screeds in particular require a specific primer approach to manage their surface characteristics, and mismatches between primer, adhesive and screed type are a recurring cause of flooring failures.

Specifying compatibility means confirming that the primer, adhesive and floor finish system have been checked against the specific screed type installed, rather than assuming a generic product will work across all substrates. Manufacturers publish compatibility guidance for this reason, and it should be followed rather than substituted at the last minute.

This is particularly important where different trades are responsible for the screed and the floor finish, since neither may have full visibility of the other's product data unless compatibility is addressed explicitly in the specification.

Using the wrong primer, or omitting it, is a common and avoidable cause of adhesive failure or debonding beneath floor finishes.

Specifying compatibility means naming, or requiring confirmation of, a primer and adhesive system that the manufacturers themselves confirm is suitable for the screed type, floor finish, and any underfloor heating present, rather than leaving this choice to be resolved informally on site.

Coordinating between trades

Because the screed installer and the flooring contractor are often different trades, compatibility can fall into a gap between specifications unless it is addressed explicitly. The specification should require written confirmation of compatibility before adhesive works begin, referencing the actual products to be used.

Surface preparation — such as sanding to remove laitance from a calcium sulfate screed — should be specified as a distinct step ahead of priming, since skipping preparation can undermine an otherwise correctly chosen primer and adhesive system.

Formulation choice and its effect on primer selection

Naming calcium sulfate or cementitious formulation in the clause tells the flooring trade which primer family to source, since a primer suited to one substrate can debond when used on the other.

Where a power-floated finish rather than a self-smoothing surface is wanted, stating that alongside the formulation avoids a compliant but unsuitable primer being selected for the wrong surface texture.

Vapour management and its effect on primer performance

A damp-proof membrane, vapour check layer or tanked substrate that has not been named in the drawing can leave ground moisture reaching the screed surface and defeating an otherwise correctly chosen primer.

Where insulation with limited compressive strength forms part of the base build-up, resolving how it meets the vapour layer on the drawing avoids the primer specification being undermined by a moisture path nobody accounted for.

Warranty cover and primer or adhesive selection

Where a screed manufacturer offers an insurance-backed warranty, cover for adhesive-related failures usually depends on the specified primer and adhesive system having been used exactly as named in the method statement.

Recording the primer and adhesive products actually used, alongside batch references, gives a traceable link between what was warranted and what was installed on site.
