Minimum Charges on Small Screed Jobs

A 12m² utility room isn't a scaled-down version of a 150m² new build — it's a different pricing problem entirely.

It surprises a lot of people that a small screed job — a single ensuite, a boot room, a modest extension — often costs more per square metre than a much larger pour. It's not that small jobs are being penalised; it's that the fixed costs of getting a pump, mixer and crew to any site at all don't shrink just because the room is small.

That fixed cost, spread over a small area, produces a higher per-m² figure even though the total bill is far lower than a big job's. Understanding this upfront saves a lot of confusion when comparing our quote against a per-m² figure you've seen quoted for a large development elsewhere.

Below is how we think about small-job pricing, and a few genuine ways to keep the total down without cutting corners.

Why the minimum charge exists

Every pour needs a mixer or pump on site, a crew to lay, level and finish the screed, and travel to and from the site — regardless of whether the area is 10m² or 400m². Below a certain size, that fixed cost simply can't be spread thin enough to match the per-m² rate of a large pour.

This isn't unique to us or to screed — it's the same logic behind minimum call-out charges across almost every trade that involves plant hire.

Ways to keep a small job cost-effective

  • Time it alongside a neighbour's job or another trade's visit if you're on a shared site
  • Bundle several small rooms into a single pour day rather than separate visits
  • Confirm insulation and membrane are fully ready before we book the date
  • Be flexible on the exact pour day, which can help us slot you next to another local job
