Liquid Screed for Conservatory Replacement Projects

Replacing an ageing conservatory with a solid-roof garden room or orangery-style space is a good opportunity to upgrade the floor to a warm, level liquid screed.

Many older conservatories are uncomfortable to use year-round, often too cold in winter and too hot in summer, and a common solution is to replace the glazed roof with a solid, insulated roof to create a proper year-round room. When this kind of upgrade takes place, it's often practical to address the floor at the same time, since the original conservatory base may have limited insulation and wasn't designed with the improved thermal performance of the new roof in mind.

Liquid screed allows the existing conservatory floor to be brought up to a warmer, more comfortable standard, with the option to introduce underfloor heating for the first time now that the room is intended for genuine year-round use. Because the footprint of a conservatory replacement is usually fixed by the existing base, the screed pour tends to be a relatively contained, straightforward job compared with a full extension.

We assess the existing base as part of the initial visit to confirm whether it's suitable to take a new screed layer directly, or whether some preparation is needed first.

Conservatory Replacement — the points that decide it

  • Suits conservatory-to-solid-roof upgrade projects where floor performance needs improving
  • Option to introduce underfloor heating for genuine year-round comfort
  • Relatively contained pour given the fixed conservatory footprint
  • Improves on the thermal performance of many original conservatory floor bases
  • Assessment of the existing base included as part of the initial site visit
  • Smooth, level finish ready for a variety of final floor coverings

Improving comfort with a solid roof upgrade

When a conservatory roof is replaced with a solid, insulated structure, the room's thermal performance improves considerably, but the original floor may still be letting heat escape. Upgrading the floor at the same time, with insulation and a liquid screed layer, helps the whole room perform consistently rather than leaving a weak point at floor level.

Assessing the existing base

Conservatory floors vary widely in how they were originally built, from a simple slab to a raised timber platform. We check the existing base during our site visit to confirm what preparation, if any, is needed before a new screed layer can be laid, and advise on the best approach for your particular conservatory.
